Sardinian coasts at risk of erosion due to climate change: according to a recent study by ENEA, by 2100 seven new coastal areas of Sardinia could be submerged due to the rise of the sea. This is the theme of the World Wetlands Day, scheduled for 2 February 2019: wetlands and climate change. The event, which also takes place on the island, aims to raise public awareness of the importance of wetlands, territories essential for mitigating extreme weather events.
EVENTS. The programme of events, promoted by MEDSEA (Mediterranean Sea and Coast Foundation) with the active participation of municipalities, stakeholders, local associations and partners involved in the initiative, starts with a two-day meeting, debates, guided tours and educational excursions in some of the most evocative compendia of the Gulf of Oristano and the Sinis Peninsula, on the occasion of the World Wetland Day, which for the past 21 years has been held on 2 February, the day on which - in 1971 - the International Convention for Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar was adopted.
On Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd February 2019 the territory reveals its beauties to students and visitors: from the opening of the photographic exhibition #SardiniaWetlands to the didactic laboratory organized in the rooms of the Museum of the Sea of Marceddì, from the birdwatching activities in the wetlands near the pond of Cabras to the excursions in the area of Marceddì. And then there are tastings, concerts, tours of ponds and lagoons and the guided tour of the pond of Sa 'e Proccus (San Vero Milis) with the placement of a station for the observation of cranes.
On the opening day of 2 February, the two moments of confrontation with all the actors of the project: in Oristano, at the Lido Restaurant, from 10 to 12.30, the scientific seminar promoted by MEDSEA is scheduled, entitled "What priorities for the conservation of birds in the territory of the MARISTANIS project?"by LIPU; in Terralba, at the Museum of the Sea of Marceddì, from 15 to 17.30, the conference "The allied wetlands of man in the fight against climate change" promoted and coordinated by MEDSEA in collaboration with the municipal administration of Terralba.
On Sunday, February 3, at 12.00, at the Sea Museum of Marceddì, Daniela Ducato, entrepreneur of the Sardinian companies Edizero, Architecture for Peace, productive activities of biomaterials realized exclusively with vegetable, animal and mineral surpluses and residues, will award the winners of the PHOTOGRAPHIC CONTEST #SardiniaWetlands, promoted by the MEDSEA Foundation and coordinated by the Association of Italian Naturalist Photographers - Sardinia Section (AFNI). The contest was reserved for high school students of Sardinia.
The events, some of which will last throughout the month of February, develop the theme of the protection of wetland ecosystems, essential to strengthen the natural capacity of our territories to withstand the impacts of climate change.
