An all weekend, from 18 to 20 May, dedicated to “Ecology and conservation of lagoon birds” through talks and meetings between local and international experts talks and discuss for the MARISTANIS project
These days the World Migratory Bird Day (www.worldmigratorybirdday.org) is celebrated all over the world, a theme that closely touches the coastal wetlands of the Gulf of Oristano and of the Sinis Peninsula where more than 100 bird species live.
Among these some are permanent while others are migratory and come mainly from the center of Africa and stop in the Oristano’s Gulf area for reproducing purposes or to rest and then leave for northern Europe.
The wetlands of the Gulf of Oristano and the Sinis Peninsula are, moreover, one of the most important area in Italy for the concentration of osprey individuals, especially in very strong decline throughout Europe, in contrast to the flamingo that in recent years has seen grow its population throughout the Mediterranean.
The need to make a point on how to preserve the richness of biological diversity of our wetlands and to organize a moment of operational comparison on these aspects is one of the objectives of the MARISTANIS project, a project of international cooperation for the definition of a model of integrated management of the wetlands and coastal areas of the Gulf of Oristano; co-funded by the MAVA Foundation and coordinated by the MEDSEA Foundation in collaboration with the Marine Protected Area "Penisola del Sinis - Isola di Mal di Ventre" and with the FLAG "Pescando”.
MEDSEA Foundation, in collaboration with the Sinis’s MPA, organized a full weekend weekend, from 18 to 20 May, on the theme "Ecology and conservation of lagoon birds" with various moments aiming to involve experts, the local population everyone interested in the topic.
Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May, the technicians of the Sardinia Region with the local and international researchers will meet to discuss the management aspects and the possible actions to propose and implemented in the area. Through various moments of discussions and field visits, some specific actions will be evaluated, considering the need to implement measures aimed at the protection and conservation of the lagoon birds. Besides the local researchers and representatives of the public bodies, will be present Flavio Monti, Researcher at the University of Siena and manager of the Scientific and Technical Network of MedWet, the Mediterranean initiative for wetlands of the Ramsar Convention; Matteo Griggio, Ethologist, Professor at the University of Padua and Lorenzo Serra, Head of Bird Ringing Section - Migratory Bird Area of the national Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA).
Two public events among the various meetings: Friday 18 May in Arborea, the morning will be dedicated to a public meeting with institutions and experts at the Museum of Reclamation of Arborea (MUBA) Corso Italia - former mill n. 24, from 9am to 1.30pm; while Sunday morning, May 20, there will be an ornithological walk (birdwatching) aiming to explore the world of birds that live in our wetlands accompanied by experts. Meeting point at S’Ena Arrubia Camping at 9.30 am.
