Integrated aquaculture: producing respecting the environment

Workshops and seminars in Oristano with the Lab Boat project: science on board of a sailing boat.

Facing an ever-increasing world population, the demand for fish products is destined to grow and weigh on natural resources, increasingly constrained by the limits imposed by ecosystems.

Aquaculture can help to answer to the growing demand of fish products and it is also a major economic driver, as well as an important job opportunity.

In 2014, for the first time, global aquaculture production exceeded the fish productions, whose catches from wild populations remained relatively static since the late 1980s.

However, aquaculture is today called to face new challenges so that it can continue to grow and develop in the perspective of sustainability of production processes and research plays a crucial role in guiding a sustainable development of this sector.

According to these points, the International Marine Center (IMC) of Oristano is carrying out a research activity aiming at tackling the key themes of the aquaculture’s future. Integrated aquaculture (IMTA - Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture) represents a model of aquaculture that aims at reducing pollutants, saving water, energy and diversifying the productions.

On May 5, 2018 in Oristano, this topic will be addressed with many other, within the LAB BOAT project.

The seminar "Integrated aquaculture, producing respecting the environment" will be held by Dr. Dario Vallainc of the IMC and will take place at the headquarters of the Provincial Industrial Consortium of Oristano starting at 9:00 am.

Dr. Vallainc will address the themes of the new frontiers of sustainable aquaculture, starting from the great Sardinian experience.

He will also talk about the strong need to expand the pool of species raised and show how aquaculture for active restocking and modern integrated aquaculture techniques can help at reducing the impact on the environment of this important productive sector.

"LAB BOAT - navigate with science", is a project promoted and organized by CRS4, funded by the Foundation of Sardinia. It will arrive on Saturday in Oristano, at the industrial port of Santa Giusta with its Adriatic sailboat. In addition to Oristano, stops are planned in the ports of Cagliari, Olbia, Alghero and Carloforte.

The Adriatica boat will host the schools and will realize laboratories led by staff of the sardinian research centers and universities involved in the Lab Boat project. The entire program is available on the official page of the LAB BOAT event.
