Sardinia celebrates and launches the World Wetlands Day on February 2 with a full calendar of events that will take place throughout the month, many of which in "home edition", online and comfortably accessible from home.
World Wetlands Day Sardinia (hashtag #WWDSardegna) is organized by the MEDSEA Foundation, within the Maristanis destination project for the integrated management of wetlands and sustainable development. It will open its doors on Tuesday, the 2nd in the afternoon from the facebook page / maristanis. At 3 pm there will be an online seminar on the theme of water, main topic of this WWD year's edition, with some testimonials and researches from the tourism sector on how to reduce water footwprint using real-time communication and feedback to travelers. On February 6th, live again from the Maristanis Facebook page, it will open the first of the five virtual tours scheduled from the most iconic places in the Oristanese wetlands. Ramsar House in San Vero Milis will open its door at 4 pm where some representatives from the municipality will speak about the territory, its traditions, materials and wetlands heritage, together with the archaeologist Alfonso Stiglitz. On Sunday 7 February, Gabriele Pinna, spokesperson for Lipu Oristano, will accompany the virtual audience at sunset in the pond of Sale 'e Porcus where, with due distances, it will be possible to see the last group of cranes in transit before undertaking, in a few weeks, their migration route to North Africa.
On the 13th of February at 11 o’ clock, the archaeologists Barbara Sanna and Alfonso Stieglietz, together with geologist Roberta Sanna will bring us on the traces of the wetlands past; while, in the afternoon, it will be then the turn of Marceddì Tower, among the most loved FAI places in Sardinia, which will be opening its doors for the first time after its restoration, in collaboration with the Municipality of Terralba, together with Fai Oristano and Yallers Sardinia. The last online appointment of the series will take place in the afternoon of Saturday 20 February in a live broadcast from some of the most favorite places in the Maristanis wetlands, organized by the tourist operators of the Friends of Maristanis club, together with Alea Coop.
But the initiatives don’t stop there! From 2 to 9 February, a special World Wetlands Day Sardinia photo contest will be launched on instagram with the hashtag #WWDSardegna to invite people share photos and words about the ponds in Sardinia and, at the same time, raise awareness on the important role they play in protecting our ecosystem and biodiversity. For the best contributions, as prizes, some “basics” for the exploration of the ponds such professional binoculars, backpack, water bottle and baseball cap ... as well as a voucher for the purchase of fish products, in collaboration with Nieddittas and Afni, the Italian association of nature photographers. Meanwhile, for the whole month of February (registrations by 5.2 from the maristanis.org competition page), the classes from the secondary schools within the 11 Maristanis municipalities area (Arborea, Arbus, Cabras, Guspini, Nurachi, Oristano, Palmas Arborea, Riola Sardo, San Vero Milis, Santa Giusta, Terralba) are invited to take part in the contest “Lands of water, imagine the wetlands of the future” by submitting short stories or drawings.
