Raising his arms in victory, Antonio Putzu brings the “cantoi”, the pole, parallel with the bottom of su fassoni, kept in balance by his bare feet. An almost ancestral figure in the reverberation that the sun gives to the pond, agitated by a gentle west breeze. Along with him, S. Giusta and his wetlands have won, with the regatta “de Is fassonis” renewing their central role in uniting collectivity, work and nature in an identity feeling.
The day commenced with the parade of the “fassoneris” towards the regatta field, opened by the young students of the laboratory of construction and management of the ancient fishing boats, a weaving of marsh hay used during the Nuragic, Phoenician and Roman eras. "In the adult competition this year we had seven boys from the school, which has now been active for ten years", explains the master of the laboratory Marco Pili, who in the regatta finished second behind Putzu, and was followed by Davide Cadoni. In the rowing competition, won again by Putzu, the son of the master Pili, Davide, preceded the expert Cadoni. A sign that the efforts of the municipality and the Pro Loco of S. Giusta to give continuity to the tradition of the regatta have brought excellent results. The 2019 edition was dedicated to Ireneo Ledda, who died two months ago and was the first, forty years ago, to see the role of the fassonis regatta in the promotion of the territory. “The time has come to transform this splendid tradition into a real regatta, in a competition with clear rules capable of improvin the show. We have the new generations, we can grow them and put them in the water with a new spirit. Already from the forty-first edition”.
"We also opened to girls, and next year Silvia, who is now fourteen, will take part in the adult regatta. The school of Marco Pili is very important", says the president of the Pro Loco Vittorio De Lauso. The regatta was accompanied by the music of many local folk groups and the fumes of the famous local fish, cooked on the grill.
"Communities and associations responded as always with enthusiasm" says Antonello Figus, mayor of S. Giusta, one of the eleven municipalities involved in the Maristanis Project. "The presence of young people is the other important element, especially in the first year of the race without Ireneo Ledda. Everything changes, of course, but the tradition resists and continues”
