As every year, the World Wetlands Day on the anniversary of the RAMSAR convention (of 1971, Feb. 2nd) calls and Sardinia, in particular the Oristanese area, replies within the Maristanis project that aims at the protection, management and enhancement of these extraordinary wetlands!

World Wetlands Day in Sardinia, from 2 to 27 February join the competition #WWDSardegna on Instagram
In the occasion of the World Wetlands Day which celebrates ponds and lagoons in the world next February 2, the MEDSEA foundation launches the contest on wetlands in Sardinia with the hashtag #WWDSardegna to raise awareness and promote these still little-known habitats.
MEDSEA foundation, which has been carrying out the Maristanis project in the Oristano area in Sardinia since 2017, attended last week the yearly meeting of the MAVA steering committee. The session took place from 16 to 17 December 2021 in Châteauneuf-le-Rouge, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and gathered together the international partners of the M3 strategy which aims to improve the conservation of the coastal wetlands.
On February 2, the World Wetlands Day will be celebrated once again the Oristanese wetlands region. To recall the central role of wetlands in addressing climate and environmental crisis and to raise awareness of the importance of these basins especially in this west coast side of Sardinia, within the Maristanis project.
The first round of meetings of the Coastal Contract participatory process came to an end. For two months it saw the experts of the MEDSEA Foundation, on behalf of the Coordination Group, discuss in 9 meetings and over 20 hours of listening of all the institutional, economic, cultural and environmental forces operating in the Gulf of Oristano.
On October 26 began in Oristano the participatory process that has followed the birth of the Marine Coastal Wetlands Contract, a voluntary tool aimed at the development of an integrated and collective management of Natura 2000 sites of the Oristano Gulf.
The Friends of Maristanis Club is expanding! Twenty seven extra companies working in tourism and catering decided to join the network and start controlling their water consumption as well as finding ways for water saving to protect and enhance the Oristano wetlands area. 51 members e companies in total, including accommodation facilities (hotels, B&B, short let, home holidays...), restaurants, bars, tourist associations and more.
Starting from October 26th, and until the beginning of May 2022, the experts of the MEDSEA Foundation will begin a participatory process to meet and discuss with everybody representing the civil, scientific and economic society of the municipalities involved in the new governance tool for wetlands and coastal areas.
The "Wetlands and Coastal Zones Contract" family is growing: with a resolution of the Municipal Council, the municipality of Nurachi has decided to become part of the integrated governance tool that is already composed by the municipalities of Arborea, Arbus, Cabras, Guspini, Oristano, Palmas Arborea, Riola Sardo, San Vero Milis, Santa Giusta and Terralba, from the Sardinia Region, the Province of Oristano and the Oristano Reclamation Consortium.
Il progetto Maristanis da oggi è anche visitmaristanis.it Terre d’acqua in Sardegna, il nuovo sito che promuove gli itinerari naturalistici, culturali ed enogastronomici degli 11 comuni aderenti al progetto Maristanis, un’iniziativa della Fondazione MEDSEA che dal 2017 coordina il progetto.
A pioneering award for saving water resources in agriculture: the national Coldiretti Green Oscar has been won by Andrea Liverani, a young drone pilot and partner, together with Coldiretti Oristano, in the activities focused on agriculture that the MEDSEA foundation implements within the Maristanis project, born in 2017 for the conservation and sustainable development of the Gulf of Oristano wetlands.
More than encouraging results come from the actions that the Maristanis project is carrying out to save water in the areas surrounding the six Ramsar sites in the Gulf of Oristano.
